Gavin(ギャビン)です。

“Family Friendly Fine Dining”

Before having children, my wife and I loved going on dates together to discover restaurants with good atmosphere, food and wine.

Since becoming parents however, “Italian restaurant dining” often means taking a ticket and waiting for a booth for 4, where the iPad offers a pizza choice of either corn or sausage, and our wine is served in a plastic cup.

Don’t get me wrong – we love family-friendly restaurants, but dining with children doesn’t always have to be this way.

Tucked into the back streets of Hara machida is a little Italian restaurant that offers the best of both worlds – classy Italian dining meets a family-friendly atmosphere.

Upon entering “Luce”, you may notice they have a kids corner – a small yet friendly little nook offering a small library, toys, puppets, colouring books and pencils. This area fits seamlessly into the environment (and it seems that all toys supplied have been chosen for calm and quiet play:)

Our children slip off to join two other kids in the play nook, while my wife and I peruse the menu – mouthwatering stone-baked pizzas and pasta choices, and a generous array of antipasti cheese boards and cured meats. Tonight we choose the garlic prawns and sweet potato gnocchi for entree.

And for our kids dinner? Lux’s special children’s set is the reason they both raced to our home genkan to put their shoes (without being asked twice!)

The waiter brings two wooden boards to the table. Each has 3 balls of dough, a rolling pin and a ramekin of flour for them to roll their own bunny shaped pizzas – it’s an art class with edible nendo!

When the kids have finished crafting their masterpiece, the chef adds the sauce and a little face crafted from cheese, then pops them into the custom built mosaic-tiled pizza oven. My children watch, entranced as their pizzas bubble and rise.

Their excitement is understandable – I can hardly wait for our own pizzas to arrive.

When everybody has finished their dinner, the kids’ desert plates are presented – two cute little ice-cream rabbits with biscotti ears.

It’s been a fine evening – my wife and I enjoyed adult conversation over good wine and quality food, while our two children returned from the nook each time a new form of rabbit-themed food arrived at the table – the perfect blend of “Ishoni-futari”.

For any parents craving a fine-dining experience that doesn’t require a babysitter, I quietly recommend trying Luce.
